Let’s walk through the things that you need.
Choosing the Room
First things first, find the room that you have available to have your home office.
Do you have an extra bedroom?
Do you have a walk-in closet?
Is there a vacant corner somewhere in the house?
Picking out the Desk
You’ll need a desk. When picking out a desk, pay attention to the size of the desk to ensure it will fit where you need it too.
Questions to ask yourself:
Do you like to sit or stand at your desk?
What do you want to keep on the desk?
Do you have a computer?
Do you use a second monitor?
Once you know what goes on the computer, check the width and depth of the top of the desk to see what will fit the best. Get a ruler out if you need a better visual.
Corner Desks
These corner desks are great when there’s not much room available.
This corner desk also has a shelving.
Armoire Computer Desks
Armoire computer desks are great to be able to close up the doors when you’re finished working for the day. I’m using an armoire computer desk for my home office in an extra bedroom.
Just make sure there’s a slideout for the keyboard or computer to go on. This slideout allows for space for you to sit with your chair.
Wall Desks
Wall desks are available too. Some close up and others don’t.
Stand Up Desks
There are a number of stand up desks to choose from too. Some are smaller where you place on top of another table or desk too like this particular one.
Below is one that is a stand up one all by its self.
Traditional Desks
Traditional desks come in all different sizes, colors, and styles.
Picking out your Office Chair
I recommend something comfortable if you’re going to be sitting at the desk for the majority of your work shift. You’ll need to decide if you want wheels or not and what your budget is. You need to know how tall your desk will be when deciding which desk.
There are so many chairs to pick from. These are some questions to consider.
Do you want armrests?
Is having an adjustable height chair something you’re interested in?
Do you want a headrest? If so, do you want it to be adjustable?
There are lumbar and other support features to choose from.
Do you want a chair that swivels?
And then, of course, there’s the material and color to think about.
Organizers
If you have room on the desk surface, these organizers are great since they’re right there.
If space is limited or you don’t like much on the desk, there are wall organizers.
Filing Cabinet
Whether it’s built into the desk, a separate filing cabinet or a portable file organizer, it’s perfect for staying organized. There is a variety to choose from.
Office Supplies
Don’t forget about these items that we use so much – staplers, staples, paper, pens, pencils, folder, post-it notes, paperclips, plug strip, etc.
I love these tabs. I like to be able to move them and they’re durable.
Lighting
You’ll need good lighting too which can be something on your desk, wall, or floor lamps.
Calendars
Have a calendar handy to review -your planner or just a simple one for planning (and keeping track of what day it is). I have huge calendars on my wall to keep up with the variety of things going on. It’s great for planning too. I use different color mini post-it notes to distinguish different tasks. It’s great to see the big picture at a glance.
Below is a small version you can use to stay organized.
Inspiration
Something motivational is great to give your new space that special touch. These types of things can make it your happy place.
