Identify your Goals
Brainstorm ideas of what you would like to focus on in a certain time period.
There are basically 3 types of categories of goals:
- Short term – less than 3 year
- Mid term – 3 to 10 years
- Long term – 10 years and over
There will be different amounts of time associated with each of these 3 categories when reading other articles and that is fine. The important thing is to see the distinction of time they represent.
It’s great to know what your goals are, but now we need to make them a SMART goal.
What is a SMART goal?
It is a goal that is:
S – specific
M – measurable
A – attainable
R – realistic
T – time
S – specific
What do I want to achieve?
M – measurable
How will I know if I’m making progress or achieved it?
A – attainable
Do I have the tools I need to do this?
R – realistic
Is the goal and time frame to accomplish this realistic?
T – time
When do I need to accomplish this?
By making it a SMART goal, it will be easier to track your progress towards each goal.
How to Start Making Personal Goals
Below are the steps needed to get you started towards your personal goals.
Identify what your goals are.
While you may have lots of personal goals you want, it is better to focus on just a few, perhaps 3-5 to start with.
Make it a SMART goal.
Write down “Why” this goal is important.
Set up action plan for each goal.
What steps do you need to take to get there.
One of the most important steps in this process, is “Why” you want to do this.
Over time, the motivation to keep working towards goals may disappear, and if we remember why this is important to us, we can get back on board.
Let’s look at a personal financial goal example
Identify financial goal:
I want to save money for emergencies.
Make it a SMART goal:
S – specific: I want to set up an emergency fund of $1,000.
M – measurable: I will be able to see if I’m saving about $24 per week.
A – attainable: Yes, I have what resources I need to achieve this.
R – realistic: Yes, if I work on reducing expenses.
T – time: I want to have this by 9/30/xx.
Why – I want to be less stressed when an emergency occurs where I need this money. By having this money available, that will give me some peace.
Action steps (assume have 1 year)
I need to save $1,000 in 1 year. So monthly, I need to save $84. ($1,000/12 = $83.33)
I can do the following steps every month:
Bring my work to lunch 3 times per week – saving 3 times x $8 estimated cost per meal = $24 weekly ($24 weekly x 4 weeks = $96)
If I do this each week, I will have enough money to set aside for my emergency fund, plus a little extra to put towards another goal. And let’s be honest, life happens, so some weeks I may be able to bring my lunch 4 or 5 times while other weeks only 2 times.
I will set up a separate saving account at the bank to keep this money where I’m not tempted to spend it.
