Wishing Well Wedding Defined
When engaged couples have a lot of their household items that they typically get for their wedding, they may opt to request money instead. This is referred to as a “wishing well”. There are wishing well showers and weddings.
But there are various money wedding traditions. One includes pinning money to the bride and groom’s clothes and a quick dance until it’s the next person’s turn. It is known as the money dance.
At the weddings I’ve attended, sometimes a long line forms to get a chance to do this money dance. It’s fun to watch and of course, not everyone participates, and it’s not expected either.
Weddings can be expensive – save money with these free tips and guest list spreadsheet.
Types of Wishing Well Weddings
- Physical ones – It’s basically a fancy or decorative container that holds money and gift cards for the wedding couple.
- Online ones – A cash registry online where guests can give money as their gift. An example of one is from The Knot.
We’re going to focus on the physical ones.
Since money can be a sensitive subject, you’ll need to decide if you mention it at all on your wedding invitations. If you decide to put it on an invitation, there’s short wording, funny wording, poems, etc. to give you suggestions.
An option is also to have a traditional wedding registry and cash registry or some sort.
Wishing Well Containers
There are several items that can serve as the “wishing well”. It basically is a cute arrangement that can hold cards and well wishes.
You can also have a unique guest list and use some of these containers to have as a keepsake of your wedding too. Remember to have things to write with and on if you’re asking guests to drop something in a wishing well container.
There are wood ones that vary in size. They also make cute table decorations. The wood can be the rustic brown, distressed a color, or painted whatever color you want.
Do you have any of the old fashion looking suitcases? These are cute and either free or really cheap from a garage sale or thrift shop.
To jazz it up some, you can add flowers, a sign, or a cute doily.
From simple wooden or clear acrylic boxes to fancier ones with engraving and actual key locks.
Card boxes are rather easy to DIY and make it fit your budget. You can bling it out and put silk flowers on it.
They can also be used for other occasions like graduation.
There are cute jars that can serve to collect cards, money, etc. Just be sure a card will fit. A simple ribbon and sign can be used along with greenery as a table decoration.
A jar like this one would be perfect.
Many of these containers can be used in your house and serves as a great memory of your special day.

Wishing Well Items
There are cute cards to have available for people to write advice or well wishes on or you can make you’re own.
For advice cards, it can be just open space or questions to prompt them to address certain areas.
Phrases like this can be used:
Every day …
Don’t forget …
What’s the best place to put this?
If it’s items like advice or well wishes, it can be near the entrance door, so they’ll see it.
For actual presents or money, it should be in a secured area. Your guest will want you to receive this and not have it walk off.
A Wishing Well Wedding is an option instead of a traditional wedding registry or you can do a combination of both. Whether you have a money dance or a wishing well container of some sort, you’ll want to just be sensitive that some guests may prefer not to participate in giving money. You can also have the option available for them to give you some type of advice or well wishes.
